JANUARY 2015 NEWS

Some words from Alice:

DR MARTIN DAY CARE CENTRE
I would like to thank everyone for all the support during the year. We really appreciate your help and the wonderful community spirit in the village of Portlaw. Thanks to the staff, committee, volunteers and patrons of the Dr Martin Day Centre, for without all the hard work the centre would not be sustainable. Thanks to Mary O’Donnell, who came to make cards in the centre; the ladies really enjoyed this. I would like to thank Thomas and Breda Fogarty and the girls in the shop, Dermot and Theresa in the pharmacy, Collette, Liam and Bill in Bláthanna for all their help during the year. I would like to thank Maggie Rockett who had a fund raiser for the Dr Martin Day centre and all who donated to us during the year. I would like to thank David Power and Paul Power and all at Honeywell for their kind donation. Likewise, I would like to thank Bausch and Lomb for their kind donation. I would like to thank Mary Butler, Anne Nolan and all the Carol singers who generously gave up their time to sing on two very cold nights. Thanks also to Andy Griffin, Helen Cowman, Dunphy’s Butchers, Desserts First, Michael O’Brien, Just Desserts, Dawn Meats and Flavahans for their kind donations to the centre. We really appreciate all the support from the community.
Our flower arranging classes have come to an end till sometime in the New Year. I would like to thank Collette from the local flower shop for everything; she is truly talented.
Don’t forget our cookery classes on alternative Tuesdays from 2-4 pm; we are having great fun. Calling all good cooks in the local areas; if you have any suggestions, tips or ideas, we would really appreciate them. Anyone with good recipes for home baking please come to centre to give us a hand. We would like to make up a booklet for all the good recipes and try them out here at the centre.
Feana’s Fun programme is running on Tuesday mornings and this is excellent for an active mind; all are welcome to drop in. Darren Loftus comes on Wednesday 11.30 to 12.30 to do exercise. We have music every Wednesday afternoon by our local musicians Kevin Nolan, Seán O’Brien, Mgt. Dooley, Gerry Walsh, Bim Connors, Busty Griffin and Tom Comerford, and I would like to thank all the musicians for all their help and support in the centre.  We have Meditation on Thursday mornings and Bingo on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. We have shower facilities and hair washing service in the centre. If anyone would like to avail of this service, please drop in.
Any older people in the community with any issues and problems with their medical card, call to the centre and I will try to resolve, or help people to re-apply for their medical card.
Eyes on the Road mobile opticians are here by appointment only. If anyone needs to see the opticians please call to centre.
The Complementary Therapist will be here at the centre every second Tuesday. You can make an appointment by calling the centre. The Chiropodist is also here every second Wednesday at the centre. Please ring for an appointment (051) 387111.
We now have a Beautician here in the centre on alternate Tuesdays, so if you would like to pamper yourself with a facial, manicure or pedicure, call to book or pop in. Very reasonable rates and comes highly recommended.
